After five long years, audiences finally got to see First Person during our <a href="http://firstpersondocumentary.org/first-person-world-premiere" style="color: #990000">World Premiere</a> at the 2008 Philadelphia Film Festival. The response was overwhelming, including two sold out houses, two standing ovations, and two major awards.<p> The best part of all this success was the opportunity it provided to use First Person as a tool for social change. We raised over $5,000 to provide financial assistance to Philadelphia high school students on the path to college through the <a href="http://firstpersondocumentary.org/how-to-donate" style="color: #990000">First Person Trust Fund</a>. We also brought substantial <a href="http://firstpersondocumentary.org/press" style="color: #990000">media attention</a> to the issues facing urban public high school students.<p> With screening requests pouring in, another round of <a href="http://firstpersondocumentary.org/college-ambassadors" style="color: #990000">The College Ambassadors Project</a> about to begin, and plans underway to use First Person as part of local and national advocacy campaigns, the good work will continue. The North Philadelphia College Ambassadors, a group of nine African-American and Latino men ages 16-19, have put forth a new youth-centered framework for helping us to understand what they need to make it to college - and they have graded us as a city on our ability to deliver it for them. <p> We are thrilled with the success of this pilot, and we are excited to expand the College Ambassador Project into other communities in 2008! Over six weeks, First Person, Interactive Data Solutions, and the WHYY Learning Lab will be training a team of young people from North Philadelphia to become experts on the college support networks in their communities. By the end of this summer, they will have developed a vision statement for what the path to college <em>should </em>look like, assessed the quality of the supports currently available to them, and made recommendations for improvement. Pending a successful pilot this summer, we will look to replicate this model throughout Philadelphia in 2008. For us, these words say it all. First Person is pleased to continue reaching audiences who hunger to hear directly from young people themselves.<p> In addition, we are thrilled to announce another partnership with an organization working to improve public education. To learn more about our participation in the Pennsylvania Education Funding Reform Campaign, see <em> <strong>Get Involved</strong></em>, at right.<p> And, most excitingly, First Person is near completion on an expanded outreach model in which teams of youth will become experts on the postsecondary support networks in their own schools and communities. Given that Santa came early and often to First Person this year, I thought it wise to get an early jump on my thank you letters.<p> First on the list is Philadelphia's Wedge Medical Center, which provides mental health and substance abuse treatment to those in need. Their generous contribution this December will go a long ways towards completion of the film.<p> None of our successes this year would have been possible without the continued support of the Philadelphia Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, two of our oldest friends. On November 5, after filming with each of our students in their new post-high school worlds, we turned off the cameras for the last time.</p> <p>First Person is now full-speed ahead on postproduction. Under the guidance of Emmy-winning Editor Sharon Mullally, we are looking forward to having a rough cut done in March and being ready for festival & broadcast submission in late 2007.</p> <p>In the meantime, I am thrilled to share with you our new website and e-newsletter. Our new Video Clip of the Week and Student Blog features will keep you updated on the progress of the project and its stars, and I will continue to keep you posted on all of the screenings, fundraisers, and outreach events to come. TFA recruits promising young leaders to commit to teaching a minimum of two years urban and rural schools. In Philadelphia, TFA began the current school year with 260 teachers in 77 schools responsible for 22,000 students � over 12% of the School District of Philadelphia.
