Malikka, I was really attracted to your story when I viewed the film tonight, September 25, 2008. My younger daughter had a spinal fusion at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, too. My daughter lives in North Philadelphia with other classmates at Temple U. School of Pharmacy. I was so impressed that you were so focused on college all through high school. You didn't succumb to the streets. I hope that someday you can go there, your first choice. I hope that you are able to find more funding to pursue your studies in nursing. As a parent of two college age girls, I do know what expenses you are facing.

I am a registered dietitian who has reached out to middle and high school students about college, particularly majoring in nutrition and dietetics. Maybe that is why I was drawn to your story. I've encouraged others RDs to do the same. A RD working at the student health service at Temple U. has spoken to Upward Bound Math & Science also at Temple U. Before that, a nurse who has just become a registered dietitian gave talks. When times get better for me financially, I won't forget you and this organization.

Malikka

I am so proud of you and the mere fact that you have not given up is truly a blessing! I hope that you can pursue your dream of becoming a nurse but more importantly focus on doing what you want to do, not what you want to be! Please know that your story is not disappointing but rather encouraging to others. As the President and Founder of Teenagers In Charge, a non-profit mentoring organization for and about teens, I often meet young people like yourself from all walks of life along with the other peers that were shown in the film. Always remember, it not where you from, it's where you end up. If I can be of help in any way, please let me know. Continue to strive for excellence and may God bless you and keep you is my prayer.

Until next time, stay balanced and walk in peace...
